Hard to top the Alpine Inn! Love the history vibe of this decades old establishment. And kudos for adopting technology to run this busy place - the systems in place work to help get people in and ordering (not much waiting while at the table with the self-ordering). You'd think service may be weird with the self-ordering, but it's actually quite good with friendly and efficient staff stopping by frequently to assist. Now the important part - food and drink: excellent! Love the burgers, fries, pizza, appetizers and Pliny! Combine all this with a beautiful outdoor space set amongst trees in a park-like setting and you've got one of the best beer garden-style dining establishments anywhere! Love this place...5 stars

Pizza was spot on with being overboard on any one flavour; my group also enjoyed the mini sliders. Service was good too, they checked on, got our drinks on time. But one of the servers didn't know which was table no: 7 n asked us lol Ambiance is I think why ppl flock here; it's easy going relaxed atmosphere though parking is a pain during busy times; most of our group struggled with this for a while before being able to join us

We spent a weekend in the Bay Area earlier this month and met up with an old friend for lunch. He suggested the Alpine Inn, which was a slight hike for everyone, saying it was worth the outing to Portola Valley. I've spent a lot of time in the Bay Area but had never been out this way. It was a beautiful area, scenic with hills and greenery. Alpine Inn is among the town's main attractions--it's one of the oldest drinking establishments in California, with its own Wikipedia page. These days, it serves as a big, casual place to eat and drink outdoors, a destination for both tourists and locals. We went at noon on a July Saturday and the joint was busy, with a good system in place for managing the crowd. We put our name down and submitted to a reasonable wait, maybe 15 or 20 minutes. There was a waiting area with seating and access to booze and snacks. I'm sure that comes in handy when wait times drag longer. We got a notification when our party was up, and were led to our table by an earnest, competent boy who explained the ordering system. (Whatever the minimum age is to work at a restaurant in California, he was either exactly that old or somebody's 13-year-old son evading child labor laws through a hopefully wholesome loophole.) Service was hands off after that, but the QR code stuff was easy enough, and everything came out fast. We were able to help ourselves to condiments, straws, napkins, etc. The space was lovely, pleasant and open and charming. I enjoyed a Bloody Mary made with house-smoked tomatoes, 12-spice blend, and Tito's vodka, garnished with yellow pepper and green bean pickles. There was an extensive food menu, but a burger seemed like the way to go. I got Rudy's Smash Burger, a satisfying quarter pounder with Niman Ranch grass-fed angus beef, American cheese, shaved griddled onion, pickles, pickled jalapeños, and house sauce. Nothing fancy, but quite good. It came with fries, which were a bit pale but tasty enough. I don't know when I'll make it back to Portola Valley, but when I do, it'll probably be for the Alpine Inn. This was a great spot for a relaxing catch-up meal, well worth a little detour on a warm day in the Bay.

We stumbled across this place while we in the neighborhood and boy are we so glad we did. There was a long wait( 45 mins) given it was a Friday evening. They gave us option to sit inside or outside and we highly recommend outside. The vibe of this place unlike any other in the Bay Area, very sportsy and American! We absolutely loved sitting outdoors. There was a lot of craft beers on tap and interesting cocktails. We ordered the rib eye, wood fire meat and veggie pizza and pitchers. Food was great, crowd was good and it is next to a creek. All in all, great place and we will be here again ! The only constructive feedback would be the attitude of servers, when we called someone to ask a question on a specific beer, his first question was dint someone explain you how to it already how we order things here and we felt that it was really rude and condescending. Otherwise great place.
